ADVANCED PLACEMENT

College Before College? BCPS high schools offer Advanced Placement so our students have the opportunity to take college level courses without the commute!

The Advanced Placement program was designed for high school students, and offers them the opportunity at the high school level to take college-level courses taught by secondary teachers. College and university professors and high school teachers develop the course materials. Students are able to demonstrate the concepts and skills mastered through academic specific tests administered in May of each year. The tests are scored from 1 – 5, with the 5 being the highest numerical grade. Receiving high scores can result in college/university credit, advanced placement, or both. DUAL ENROLLMENT

When a student excels in a particular subject (ex. math, science) they may complete all of the classes offered in that subject at their high school before graduating. In this instance, a student may be allowed to “Dual Enroll” and take some classes at their high school and also at a local college or university. The benefits of dual enrollment are students earn college credits while still in high school and it can help to ease the transition from high school to college as well.  See your counselor if you want to learn if Dual Enrollment is an option for you!

If you’re motivated and want to customize your course selections, Michigan Virtual High School might be a good option for you. Since not all high schools offer all courses, this online, technology based learning allows students to study courses not offered by giving them access to diverse courses and flexible scheduling. Michigan Virtual High School is barrier-free, offers hundreds of courses and is offered year-round. All you need is a computer, Internet access and wiliness to learn.

MICHIGAN MERIT EXAM (MME)

The Michigan Merit Exam (MME) is used to assess Grade 11 and eligible Grade 12 students on Michigan’s English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, Science and Social Studies high school content standards and expectations. The MME has 3 distinctive components:

The MME is a required assessment by the State of Michigan and is also a graduation requirement for Bay City Public Schools. It is delivered over a 3-day period in mid-March. ACT scores received are college reportable scores. Students who take the MME and receive qualifying scores may also qualify for the Michigan Merit Promise Scholarship
